There is a "service for a fee" used by webmasters -- a "word frequency database" service. This service would be used by a webmaster to know WHAT words should be used on a web page in order to attract people.
Thus, if "sex" is the single most popular word being used on search engines, then if YOUR web page mentions "sex" you are more likely to get visitors. This is obviously not the full technology of web design, because when a word is SO popular, then you can assume that millions of web sites will be using that word to attract visitors, and you would probably be much better off using a less popular word, but where there are many fewer web sites that emphasize that word.
Thus, "sex" is a very popular word for people to enter into a search engine. That word is entered millions of times.
Out of the 350 million words and phrases in this database, renewed every TWO HOURS, SEX is the hot button -- year after year.
The actual CURRENT word frequency ticker is located at: http://www.wordtracker.com/ Go look. See what words are on the top 30 of all words.
The Wordtracker Ticker
Shows the top 30 search terms for various search engine voyeurs and metacrawlers. The database contains 350 million terms and is updated once every 2 hours.
You could certainly say that the MOST IMPORTANT concerns of people, at least those on the Internet, are NOT high and lofty concepts of philosophy and politics.
