STD's

As with all areas in this section, the risk of STD's may not be a problem for many students, depending on whether they are or decide to become sexually active or not. But certainly, anyone who is sexually active can contract or transmit an STD. Do not be fooled, no-one is immune to STD's ! It is not who you that makes you vulnerable to a sexually transmitted disease, it is what you do . Reduce your risk by protecting yourself.

What is an STD ?

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD's) are infections which can be passed from person to person through sexual contact. They are caused by bacteria, viruses and other microscopic organisms which are present in the blood, semen, body fluids or the pubic area of an infected person. Most STD's once diagnosed, can be cured with treatment. Viral STD's, like genital herpes and AIDS, are more difficult to treat and are often incurable. You do not need to feel guilty, ashamed or embarrassed if you think you have an STD. But if you do have these feelings, do not let them prevent you from getting treatment. STD's do not go away by themselves, and in many cases relatively quick, painless treatments are available. It is important to get treatment as early as possible, as STD's can cause serious and permanent damage.

How can you avoid infection with STD's ?

I. Abstention: STD's are transmitted by sexual contact with an infected person. Therefore, abstaining from sex altogether is a certain way of avoiding infection.

2.Faithful relationships :- If you are sexually active and remain faithful to one sexual partner who is also faithful to you, there is little risk of acquiring STD's. This assumes that neither of you has previously had sex with partners who were infected, or had partners who engaged in intravenous drugs.

3. Limit partners :- Nobody has a natural immunity to STD's and a once only contact can be a source of infection. Also, the more partners you have the greater your risk of catching an infection.

4. Hygiene :- Pass urine and wash your genital area as soon as possible after sexual contact. this may not be convenient but it may help you to avoid cystitis and urethritis.

5. Alcohol and other drugs :- Alcohol and other drugs impair judgement and reduce the ability to make ' safe ' decisions. Because certain diseases such as HIV/AIDS are incurable, unprotected sex or sex while intoxicated with a partner whose sexual history is unknown to you could have devastating life-long consequences.

6. Condom use :- For sexually active people who are not in a ' one faithful partner ' relationship, the proper use of a good quality, new condom, will significantly reduce the risk of infection. However, condoms do not offer total protection as they may fail during use.
