Nick Nolte -- Another Of Hollywood's Finest Role Models

Nolte could face drug charges

Nick Nolte

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Actor Nick Nolte, arrested on Wednesday on suspicion of drunk driving, could also face drugs charges, police say.

Nolte, 61, was described by highway police as "drooling" and "completely out of it" when he was pulled over in Malibu for driving erratically in his black Mercedes.

Nolte, who has talked openly about his heavy drinking, was arrested after failing a field sobriety test. He was taken back to the police station where he was booked on suspicion of drunk driving and photographed in a Hawaiian shirt looking bleary-eyed and dishevelled.

Police said on Thursday they also expected to pursue other charges against Nolte for driving under the influence of narcotics.

"We have strong reason to believe there were drugs involved," California Highway Patrol spokesman Leland Tang told reporters.

Tang said he could not disclose what drugs may have been involved until the results of blood tests on the actor, which could take several days.

Tang said the officer who stopped Nolte "found that Mr. Nolte at that point seemed completely out of it. He was drooling, (with) droopy eyes".

Nolte, a versatile actor nominated for an Oscar for the 1991 film "The Prince of Tides", alongside Barbra Streisand, is free on bail of $2,500 (1,600 pounds).

He has spoken frequently of his heavy drinking in the past, although he has sought to embrace a healthier lifestyle in recent years.

"I could drink in the morning, I could drink every day... I was a functioning drunk," he told a television interviewer in May 2001.

The six-foot, one-inch (185-cm) Nebraska-born Nolte began his career on the stage and first shot to fame on the hit 1970s television mini-series "Rich Man, Poor Man," which earned him an Emmy nomination.

Nolte's other work includes "Under Fire", "Down and Out in Beverly Hills", "Cape Fear" and "48 Hours". He is due to appear in the movie "The Hulk" which is set to be released next summer.

Nick Nolte and Sean Penn starred on stage together in the Fall of 2000 in Sam Shepard's new play, "The Late Henry Moss". This was Nolte's first stage appearance in 25 years. Woody Harrelson also acted in this play. Variety said in its review by Dennis Harvey; "It's easy to imagine "The Late Henry Moss" as a pleasing 90-minute one act, its light trot through familiar authorial terrain just right for the intimate scale and potent local casting that define high-grade regional institutions like the Magic. For now, however, "Henry Moss" is more like an 800-pound gorilla: With Nick Nolte, Sean Penn, Cheech Marin and Woody Harrelson providing more star power than any S.F. stage has seen in decades, this three-hour, Shepard-helmed premiere is one Big Event that both flatters and overwhelms the very modest play lurking somewhere inside." Harvey had great praise for Nick Nolte's performance though saying; "As much as any contempo U.S. male, Nolte has built a screen resume approximating a great stage actor's range, turning diverse roles into tragicomic Lears and fools. (What a James Tyrone he'd make!) He's hardly stretching here, character-wise. Nolte's character Earl is the same crumbling, dissolute lug he's inhabited many times of late (including the film of Shepard's "Simpatico"). Still, it's an act that works every time. Betraying occasional stagefright, Nolte nonetheless lends Earl a luxuriantly lived-in malaise that mines laughs in the smallest grunt, slouch or swallowed cussout. It's a terrific performance."

A book about Nick Nolte written by Mel Weiser was published in March 1999. The blurb from the book publisher tells me this about the book: "(written by) a friend and director from his early years at the Actor's Inner Circle in Phoenix. Nick Nolte: Caught in the Act deals with how Nick approaches acting and his roles. It is a very intimate portrait of Nick as an actor but also as Nick the man." A number of people have written to me about their opinions of the book, so if anyone reading this wishes to comment about it you can email me and I will get a page up in the future with comments or you can go comment at the Amazon.com web page for the book here Here is a photo of the cover:

The April 1999 issue of "Playboy" magazine has a large interview with Nick.

There is another interview with Nick in "Premiere"April 1999 issue written by Rachel Abramowitz, entitled "Acting on Impulse"

And yet another interview with Mr Nolte is in"Entertainment Weekly" March 19, 1999 issue written by Dave Karger and entitled "Just Say Nolte"

In 1999 Nick Nolte won the award for best actor of the year for Affliction from both the New York Film Critics and the National Society of Film Critics! Nick was also nominated for both an Academy Award and Golden Globe award as best actor of the year for his role in "Affliction".

In 1998 I had reason to look up information on the web about Nick Nolte and I was *amazed* to find very little information on Mr. Nolte on the web no matter how thoroughly I searched. No one had a web site dedicated to Nick Nolte and very little other information was available.
Considering what a long and fine career Nick Nolte has had in feature films as a major movie star it certainly was a surprising oversight.

After some thought I decided to start my own web site for Mr. Nolte and put up on the web some photos of him I have from my files and a good central collection of links to all Nick Nolte info that *is* out there on the web as well as links to reviews for all his films. Nick Nolte has had a long and distinguished career in Hollywood where he has starred in over 50 films. And yet until now he has not had a web site dedicated to him. Now he does.
Someday I may also get some of the hundreds of articles and reviews I have on hard copies in my files on Nick Nolte up here as well. On other pages of my Nolte site you can find a biography, filmography, quotes from him, reviews of his films, articles about him and lots of photographs. See the hyperlinks below to the other Nolte pages for all this new information.
